Chelsea Handler has shared that she feels fortunate her flirtation with former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo did not turn into a romantic relationship. In her new memoir, “I’ll Have What She’s Having,” Handler recalls developing an unexpected attraction to Cuomo, 67, while watching his daily COVID-19 briefings amidst the pandemic crisis.
Handler openly discussed her crush on Cuomo during that time, even taking to social media to express her admiration. Their friendly banter escalated to flirty texting, but their planned date in New York never came to fruition as Cuomo suddenly cut off communication.
In a recent interview, Handler reflected on this experience, expressing relief that she “dodged a bullet” with Cuomo. “My life is filled with dodging bullets,” she remarked, emphasizing that this was just one example among many.
Cuomo faced significant allegations of sexual harassment from multiple women in 2021, which ultimately led to his resignation, though he has denied all claims against him. Despite the controversies, Handler had previously spoken fondly of Cuomo, even dubbing him “the Italian hunk” during a comedic segment, drawn by what she perceived as strong leadership during a chaotic time.
In 2020, Handler had publicly shared her crush, even writing a humorous letter to Cuomo for Vogue, in which she expressed her desire to be his “First Lady.” She went as far as to invite him on a date, which he initially accepted, but Handler never heard back.
On an episode of “The View,” she humorously asked the hosts to inquire why Cuomo ghosted her, revealing how she had sent him various cheeky texts, including one from a moment she thought he might find entertaining.
When Cuomo eventually addressed Handler’s crush during his appearance on the show, he took it lightly, confirming he enjoyed her humor but made a joking reference to only dating New Yorkers.
Handler’s reflections on this experience have led her to conclude that perhaps her upfront approach was not the best method. “I thought I was being transparent, but it seems he preferred pursuing women who were less interested,” she mused.
As Handler continues to navigate the world of dating and relationships, she seems to have taken this experience in stride, recognizing that not all connections are meant to be.
