Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong Reflect on Stoner Comedy Legacy
Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong, the legendary duo who brought stoner comedy to mainstream audiences in the 1970s, are proud of how the genre has evolved over the years. In a conversation about their new documentary, Cheech & Chong’s Last Movie, they highlighted current comedians who carry on their legacy.
Cheech, now 78, mentioned Seth Rogen and his friends as key figures in continuing the tradition of stoner humor. He expressed his enjoyment of Rogen’s new show, The Studio. Tommy Chong, at 86, added that even today’s hip-hop artists, like Eminem, have paid homage to their work. Eminem sampled their famous song "Earache My Eye" in his 2017 track "Untouchable," showing the duo’s influence across different genres.
The appeal of Cheech and Chong’s comedy spans various audiences. Cheech noted that everyone—from Black rappers to hillbillies—connected with their humor. This universal appeal is a testament to their unique positions in the entertainment world.
Chong recalled his background in music prior to comedy and reflected on their distinctive identity. He shared how their mixed heritage allowed them to be themselves without fitting into a particular mold, which made them stand out even more.
Cheech reminisced about performing at the Climax Club, where they shared the stage with iconic acts, including the emerging band Earth, Wind & Fire. This fusion of comedy and music helped establish their unique style.
Their journey continues with Cheech & Chong’s Last Movie, currently in theaters, reminding fans of their rich legacy in both comedy and music.
