The Toronto Blue Jays have made a significant move in the free agency market, securing pitcher Dylan Cease with a seven-year contract valued at $210 million. This agreement comes after the Blue Jays’ recent defeat in a thrilling Game 7 of the World Series.
Cease, a right-handed pitcher, has been a consistent presence on the mound, having started at least 32 games in each of the past five Major League Baseball seasons. In his most recent season with the San Diego Padres, he recorded a 4.55 ERA (Earned Run Average) across 168 innings pitched. During that time, he struck out 215 batters while walking 71.
Before joining the Padres, Cease spent his first five seasons with the Chicago White Sox. His standout year was in 2022, where he achieved a 14-8 record with an impressive 2.20 ERA. Although he led the league in walks that year, his performance earned him a second-place finish in the American League Cy Young Award voting, which recognizes the best pitchers in each league.
In March 2024, Cease was traded to San Diego. In that season, he pitched to a 14-11 record with a 3.47 ERA, earning fourth place in the National League Cy Young Award voting.
As one of the most sought-after free-agent pitchers this offseason, Cease will now join a Blue Jays team that claimed the American East division title this past year.
The Blue Jays’ pitching lineup already includes notable players such as Kevin Gausman, Trey Yesavage, Shane Bieber, and José Berríos. However, with Chris Bassitt and Max Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young Award winner who started Game 7 of the World Series, becoming free agents this month, the addition of Cease is expected to strengthen the team’s pitching depth.
