In a surprising turn of events, a cat was caught trying to smuggle drugs into a prison in Costa Rica last week. The Ministry of Justice shared that guards at the Pococi Penitentiary discovered the feline scaling the fence, with around 236 grams of marijuana and 68 grams of heroin strapped to its back.
Officials suspect that the cat was used to transport the drugs to inmates inside the facility. A video released by the Ministry of Justice showed the moment when prison guards intercepted the cat while it was navigating a chain link fence topped with barbed wire.
An officer on duty noticed the animal and quickly alerted others. Thanks to their prompt response, they were able to catch the cat and safely remove the packages, preventing the drugs from reaching their destination.
After removing the drugs, authorities handed the cat over to the National Animal Health Service for evaluation. Videos also showed officials using scissors to detach the packages from the cat’s fur.
In total, officials recovered the two drug packages, along with some wrapping sheets. Law enforcement is currently reviewing security footage to trace the cat’s actions before it was spotted, aiming to identify who attempted to use the animal for this purpose and the intended recipients of the drugs.
