Caitlin Clark Set to Return for the Indiana Fever Against the New York Liberty
INDIANAPOLIS — Caitlin Clark capped off her Friday practice by sinking a halfcourt shot, earning herself a bit of lunch money in a friendly competition. This also signals her readiness to return to action for the Indiana Fever.
Expected to play against the reigning WNBA champions, the New York Liberty, on Saturday, Clark is set to make her comeback after missing the last five games due to a quadriceps injury. “As long as we don’t have any setbacks, she’s going to be ready to roll,” said Fever coach Stephanie White.
Clark’s return coincides with a nationally televised match against the Liberty, who currently hold an impressive 9-0 record, winning their games by an average of 19 points. “I’m really excited,” Clark shared. “It’s been a process, and the hardest part was feeling good and then working my way back on the court with my teammates.”
In the friendly halfcourt competition, Clark showcased her shooting skills by winning a few dollars, reminding everyone of her impressive range.
During her absence, the Fever managed a 2-3 record. Prior to her injury, Clark was averaging 19 points, 9.3 assists, six rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game. If she maintains those numbers, she could set a new record in WNBA history.
While Clark admits she isn’t the most patient person, she recognizes the importance of following her recovery plan, which included various treatments like massage, weights, and hyperbaric therapy. “It was a learning opportunity that’s going to benefit me in my career,” she noted, expressing her eagerness to shake off any rust.
In addition to Clark, the Fever also hope to have guard Sophie Cunningham back for the game on Saturday. Cunningham has averaged 6.5 points in her limited games this season. Coach White emphasized the significance of reintegrating two key players into the team. “It’s like starting Day 1 again,” she remarked.
The excitement around basketball in Indianapolis is palpable, with the Indiana Pacers competing in the NBA Finals during the same time. “It’s such a fun time to be in the city,” Coach White said, reflecting on the vibrant energy surrounding the sport right now.
As the Fever prepare for their match, fans and players alike are looking forward to an unforgettable game against the Liberty.
