Caitlin Clark has recently shared an interesting story about her childhood basketball days, revealing that she was almost named the MVP of a boys’ basketball league when she was younger. During a conversation with Robin Roberts on the stage of the Massachusetts Conference for Women, she described her experiences of growing up playing basketball with boys, saying that it was just a normal part of her life. She mentioned, “I grew up playing with boys, and we never talked about how that was different or that was weird.”
Clark’s journey in sports has been remarkable. Her parents, who kept the MVP anecdote from her until recently, played a significant role in her athletic development. Her father coached the boys’ league and recognized her talent, wanting her to be acknowledged for her skills. However, Clark explained that some parents opposed the idea of a girl being named MVP. “I was just better than all of them,” she quipped, earning cheers from the audience.
Today, Clark credits her confidence to her supportive upbringing. She recalled, “There were moments where I struggled with my confidence, but overall, I was a very confident young girl.” Her parents never limited her by saying she couldn’t do something, which has inspired her to encourage young girls to embrace their confidence in any endeavor.
Reflecting on her incredible year, which included leading her college team to the NCAA Women’s Championship, being the first pick in the WNBA draft, and winning Rookie of the Year, Clark noted how drastically her life has changed. “A year ago, I was just starting my senior year of college,” she said, astonished at her accomplishments, including making an appearance on “SNL.”
In her rookie WNBA season, Clark stood out, playing all 40 games and showcasing impressive stats—averaging nearly 20 points, over 8 assists, and setting a record for most assists in a single season. Expressing gratitude for her unique position in the league, she emphasized the rarity of being one of the few players in the WNBA. “I just try to remind myself how grateful I am,” she stated.
