Tragedy struck the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) football team on Saturday when two players were allegedly stabbed at the team’s training center hours before their game against the University of South Florida (USF).
According to a university official, the incident occurred at the Football Operations Center. Both injured players were taken to a local hospital and reported to be in stable condition. The names of the victims have not been officially released.
Following the incident, Daniel Israel Mincey, 20, was arrested by UAB Campus Police. According to online jail records, Mincey faces charges of aggravated assault and attempted murder. While Mincey is listed on the UAB football roster as a redshirt freshman, the university has not confirmed whether he is the player involved in the stabbing.
Despite the morning’s events, the university decided to proceed with the scheduled game against USF. A UAB spokesperson stated, “We’re grateful to report that two players injured in an incident this morning at the Football Operations Building are in stable condition. Our thoughts are with them and their families as they recover. The suspect — another player — remains in custody, and an investigation is taking place.”
The game kicked off at 3 p.m. ET. USF secured a 48-18 victory. The first quarter saw UAB take an early lead of 10-7. However, USF quickly responded, scoring 27 unanswered points to gain control of the game.
USF quarterback Byrum Brown led his team to victory with an impressive performance, throwing for 353 yards and accounting for five touchdowns. One of the game’s highlights was Brown’s 60-yard touchdown pass to Mudia Reuben at the start of the third quarter, extending USF’s lead to 24-10. Nykahi Davenport contributed to USF’s score with 117 rushing yards and a touchdown.
UAB quarterback Jalen Kitna passed for 230 yards but had three interceptions that proved costly for his team.
