Warren Buffett’s Philanthropic Gesture
Warren Buffett, one of the world’s most well-known investors, recently announced a generous donation of $6 billion worth of Berkshire Hathaway stock to five different foundations. This brings his total contributions since 2006 to nearly $60 billion based on the stock’s value at the time he made the gifts.
The donation, which will be made on Monday, consists of about 12.4 million shares of Berkshire Hathaway’s Class B stock. These shares are more affordable than the Class A shares, with the most recent value of a Class B share being approximately $485.68.
The largest portion of this donation is going to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Trust, receiving 9.4 million shares. Other beneficiaries include the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, which will get 943,384 shares, as well as the Sherwood Foundation, Howard G. Buffett Foundation, and NoVo Foundation, each receiving 660,366 shares.
Buffett stirred some conversation last year when he mentioned he would cease donations to the Gates Foundation after his passing, allowing his three children to determine how to allocate the remainder of his wealth.
In the past year, Berkshire Hathaway’s Class B stock has experienced a growth of 19.1%, outperforming the overall U.S. stock market return of 14.1%. Buffett’s strategy of acquiring companies at reasonable prices and maintaining a conservative approach to investments has played a vital role in his success, leading to a personal fortune estimated at around $145 billion, primarily invested in his own company.
Buffett humbly remarked, “Nothing extraordinary has occurred at Berkshire; a very long runway, simple and generally sound decisions, the American tailwind and compounding effects produced my current wealth.” He also stated that around 99½% of his estate is intended for philanthropic efforts.
