TAMPA, Fla. — Desmond Watson’s journey to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers has hit a slight pause. Coach Todd Bowles shared that the heavyweight player is currently on a day-to-day schedule after starting camp on the non-football injury list due to concerns about his weight.
Bowles emphasized the importance of making Watson a healthier player. “It’s all about improving his condition and getting him on the field as soon as we can,” he said. “He’s putting in the effort, and we’re here to support him.”
Watson, a former Florida player, was signed by the Buccaneers after going undrafted in April. At his pro day, he weighed in at 464 pounds but managed to shed about 25 to 30 pounds before the draft.
When asked about a timeline for reaching a target weight, Bowles noted, “I can’t give a specific timeframe. He’s familiar with the Florida heat, so that’s not a concern. We’ll see how things unfold.”
Standing at 6-foot-6, Watson has been collaborating with the team’s nutritionist. However, the Buccaneers have yet to disclose what his ideal playing weight should be.
