Bryan Washington is set to release a new novel titled Palaver this fall, published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. The book’s cover has just been revealed, sparking excitement among readers.
In Palaver, we follow a man living and working in Tokyo as an English tutor. Although he is distanced from his family back in Texas, he has created a life and a community for himself through friendships at a local gay bar and his relationship with a married partner. However, everything changes when his mother unexpectedly shows up at his door just weeks before Christmas, bringing their complicated relationship back into focus after a decade apart.
As the story unfolds, both characters begin to find new connections—he meets a new patron at the bar, while his mother forms a bond with a nearby bistro owner. Together, they are forced to confront their past and their bond as they navigate these new dynamics. The book promises to be a heartfelt examination of family and love, describing itself as a "life-affirming novel."
Washington, previously known for his novels Memorial and Family Meal, along with the short story collection Lot, says that the themes of Palaver are deeply rooted in community and belonging. He hopes the novel will encourage readers to reflect on their own relationships and what it truly means to belong in various circles—be it family, friends, or chosen family.
The cover art, designed by Na Kim and Alex Merto, features illustrations by Keita Morimoto, depicting the novel’s intimate themes. Washington has expressed his admiration for the design, noting that it captures the essence of the story beautifully.
Palaver is set to be published on November 4 and is available for preorder at bookstores everywhere. Washington invites readers to consider how caring for others and oneself can intertwine through the shared experiences of community and connection.
