Shooting at Brown University: Person of Interest Released as Investigation Continues
Providence, Rhode Island – In the wake of a tragic shooting at Brown University that claimed two lives and injured nine others, the Providence Police Department has released a person of interest who was detained earlier in the investigation. Officials announced the release at a Sunday night press conference, stating there was no basis to continue holding the individual.
Mayor Brett Smiley acknowledged the release, while Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha confirmed the decision was made due to a lack of evidence linking the person to the crime.
Despite the release, the Providence Police Department has assured the public that the investigation remains “fully active” with continued cooperation among various law enforcement agencies. In a statement posted on X, the department emphasized that since the initial 911 call, no specific threats to the community have been identified.
The shooting, which occurred on Saturday, prompted a significant police presence on and around the Brown University campus. The university has acknowledged the ongoing investigation and the heightened security measures in place.
“As Providence police continue to lead this investigation, they have informed Brown that they are continuing their search efforts, which includes ongoing coordination with multiple agencies,” the university stated. “There continues to be a heightened amount of local, state and federal police activity in the area as law enforcement continues to investigate and patrol with increased vigilance. The Department of Public Safety has more than doubled its staffing.”
The university is urging students and staff to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
This incident raises serious questions about safety on college campuses and the need for a strong security presence to deter crime. It also highlights the importance of a justice system that protects the rights of the accused while diligently pursuing those who commit violent acts. The focus now remains on supporting law enforcement as they work to bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice and ensuring the safety and security of the Brown University community. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing our society and the need for continued vigilance and a commitment to upholding law and order.
