Bridges Collapsing and Train Derailments in Russia: A Tragic Incident
Authorities reported that overnight explosions led to the collapse of two bridges and caused two trains to derail in western Russia. The incidents resulted in seven fatalities and left many others injured.
The first bridge, located in the Bryansk region near the Ukrainian border, fell onto a passenger train on Saturday, killing the train’s driver among the deceased. Later, the collapse of a second bridge in the Kursk region, also bordering Ukraine, caused a freight train to tip over onto the road beneath it. Fortunately, there were no casualties in this second incident, although it ignited a fire.
Russia’s Investigative Committee, the country’s primary criminal investigation agency, confirmed that explosions led to the bridge collapses but did not provide further details. Interestingly, they later modified their statement to remove mention of "explosions" without explanation. The committee announced that they would investigate these events as possible acts of terrorism.
Rescue workers worked tirelessly to clear debris from both sites, while some injured individuals were transported to Moscow for medical care. Images from government sources in Bryansk depicted train carriages mangled among the rubble of the collapsed bridge, as other footage showed motorists fortunate enough to have avoided the collapse.
In response to this tragedy, Bryansk regional Governor Alexander Bogomaz declared three days of mourning, beginning on Monday. Inspectors also discovered damage to railway tracks in other parts of the Bryansk region, though it remains unclear if this damage is linked to the collapsed bridges.
Previously, some officials have suggested that pro-Ukrainian saboteurs may be responsible for attacks on Russian railway infrastructure, though evidence on such claims has been limited. Additionally, Ukraine’s military intelligence reported an explosion of a Russian military freight train heading to Crimea, but did not connect it to the bridge incidents.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, the conflict has seen ongoing tensions, particularly in the eastern Zaporizhzhia region, which remains a focal point in the strife between the two nations.
