The NFL has suspended Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch for one game without pay after an altercation with Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Juju Smith-Schuster. The incident took place following the game between the Lions and Chiefs on Sunday night.
According to a letter from NFL Vice President of Football Operations Jon Runyan to Branch, the suspension is due to an “aggressive, non-football act” that was deemed “entirely unwarranted” and posed a “serious risk of injury.” Runyan stated that Branch’s actions violated the standards of conduct expected of NFL players and reflected poorly on the league.
Reports indicate that Branch plans to appeal the suspension. If the appeal is unsuccessful, he will miss the Lions’ upcoming Monday night game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The incident began after the Chiefs defeated the Lions by a score of 30-17. Following the game, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes attempted to give Branch a high-five, but Branch reportedly ignored him and approached Smith-Schuster. After a brief exchange of words, Branch struck Smith-Schuster in the helmet.
Smith-Schuster fell to the ground but quickly got back up and confronted Branch. Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco intervened in an attempt to de-escalate the situation, but Branch then removed Smith-Schuster’s helmet, leading to a larger scuffle involving players from both teams.
After the situation was brought under control, Branch expressed regret for his actions. “It was a childish thing, but I’m tired of people doing stuff in between the play and refs don’t catch it,” Branch said. “They be trying to bully me out there. I should have never did it. It was childish.”
Lions head coach Dan Campbell also publicly condemned Branch’s behavior. “I love Brian Branch, but what he did is inexcusable, and it’s not going to be accepted here. It’s not what we do. It’s not what we’re about,” Campbell said. He also stated that he apologized to Chiefs coach Andy Reid, as well as Smith-Schuster. “That’s not OK. That’s not what we do here. It’s not going to be OK. He knows it. Our team knows it. That’s not what we do.”
This is not the first time Branch has faced disciplinary action this season. He was previously fined $23,186 for facemask and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties during a game against the Green Bay Packers in September.
The suspension of Branch leaves the Lions without a key player as they prepare to face the Buccaneers. The team will need to find a way to adjust their defense in his absence. The NFL’s decision to suspend Branch underscores the league’s commitment to maintaining player safety and upholding standards of sportsmanship on the field. While tensions can run high during games, the league emphasizes that physical altercations are unacceptable.
