CHICAGO — In a thrilling game on Sunday, Boston Red Sox pitcher Garrett Crochet almost achieved a no-hitter against his former team, the Chicago White Sox. The bid ended when Chase Meidroth hit a single with one out in the eighth inning, breaking Crochet’s impressive streak.
After the hit, Crochet was taken out of the game. He had a standout performance, striking out 11 hitters and allowing just one walk, with 65 strikes out of his 96 total pitches.
Crochet, who was traded from the White Sox to the Red Sox last December, has had a notable career path. He was originally drafted 11th overall by Chicago in the 2020 amateur draft and made his major league debut later that year. In 2021, he delivered a 2.82 ERA and had 65 strikeouts over 54.1 innings before undergoing Tommy John surgery in April 2022. After almost a year off, he returned to the majors on May 18, 2023.
Last season, Crochet played a significant role for the White Sox, ending with a record of 6-12 and a 3.58 ERA over 32 starts for a team that struggled throughout the year. Despite the team’s overall performance, he was recognized with a selection to the American League All-Star team in his first year as a starter.
Recently, Crochet signed a lucrative $170 million, six-year contract with the Boston Red Sox, announced on April 1. With his remarkable skill set, he continues to be a player to watch as the season progresses.
