Rep. Tony Gonzales of Texas is working to give more protection to our Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents when they help out state and local police.
Gonzales has put forward a plan called the Homeland Threat Response Act. This would allow CBP to offer help in looking into violent crimes, shootings, and big events.
He pointed to groups like BORTAC and BORSTAR, which are special teams within the Border Patrol. These teams often help local police with things that aren’t about immigration.
Gonzales told Fox News that these CBP agents are taking risks because they don’t have the same protections as other police officers when they’re working outside their normal duties. He wants to make sure they are protected.
He added that this law would make sure everyone is treated fairly when it comes to protection.
Gonzales said that the United States will soon host big events like the Super Bowl, the FIFA World Cup, and the Olympics. CBP may be asked to help at these events.
He believes that these CBP agents will help keep us safe.
Border Patrol teams have helped with many important events, like mass shootings and catching dangerous criminals.
Gonzales mentioned that these Border Patrol agents are highly trained. He also noted that some Democrats want to cut funding for the Department of Homeland Security because of the previous administration’s actions on immigration.
He said that he sees Democrats giving in to those on the left who want to defund the police and make their jobs harder. He wants to ensure that these federal officers can focus on their jobs without worrying about their own safety.
