Good News at the Border: Strong Enforcement Works
For years, many politicians claimed that the only real fix for our border problems was a big new immigration law from Congress. But recent numbers show a different story. It turns out that enforcing the laws we already have can make a huge difference.
New data shows that the number of people trying to cross our southern border illegally is the lowest it has been in over 50 years. This big drop happened because of strong border security measures put in place.
In 2025, there were about 237,538 encounters with migrants at the border. That’s the lowest number since 1970. To compare, in 2022 and 2023, those numbers were over 2 million.
This good news raises a question: If strong enforcement works so well, why do some politicians keep insisting that we need a brand-new law? Some say that these lower numbers are just temporary and that we still need a new law to solve the problem for good.
But others argue that this shows that the best way to control our border is to support our border agents and give them the tools they need to do their jobs. This includes things like building a border wall and making sure that people who cross the border illegally are sent back quickly.
Having a secure border is important for many reasons. It helps to keep our communities safe, protects American jobs, and ensures that people who want to come to our country do so legally. These recent numbers show that when we focus on strong border enforcement, we can make real progress in securing our nation.
