Border Patrol Agents Share Insights from the Front Lines of Tucson
In the Tucson Sector of Arizona, Border Patrol agents Daniel Hernandez and Teresa Fast are making their daily rounds under the sweltering sun, highlighting the realities of their work at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Hernandez noted, “A few months ago, before the election and the previous administration, our main job was processing detainees. That was a minor part of our responsibilities, but it has completely flipped. Now, we focus much more on patrolling.” Most agents are now actively monitoring the border, rather than primarily handling administrative tasks.
The Tucson Sector is known for being one of the busiest areas for border agents. Hernandez mentioned that their ongoing efforts have resulted in a 91% decrease in illegal crossings compared to previous numbers. “If we were to slow down and assume that the border is secure, we would lose all the progress we’ve made. We have to stay vigilant,” he explained.
Recent statements from the White House claim illegal border crossings are down by 95% since the Trump administration compared to the Biden era. Agents attribute their success to stronger enforcement policies and a more proactive approach rather than neglect.
With an emphasis on enhanced infrastructure, Hernandez explained that fewer individuals attempt to scale the border wall due to its height and the associated risks. “Smugglers are still a serious threat, and they will go to great lengths, even using dangerous homemade ladders,” he added.
Despite the challenges, border agents have a renewed sense of hope and commitment to their duties. Hernandez and Fast both emphasize the importance of their roles in saving lives, as smugglers often treat people as mere commodities.
Border Patrol Chief Sean McGoffin echoed their sentiments, stating that their operations not only involve enforcement but also daily rescues, highlighting the human aspect often overlooked in discussions about border security. Fast summarized it well: “It’s the dedication of the men and women in this patrol that keeps our country safe. We sacrifice time with our families to fulfill our mission.”
As the agents continue their vital work, they urge the public to understand the complexities and human elements involved in border control.
