A man has been charged in connection with the shooting that occurred at a Hanukkah celebration in Bondi Beach, Australia. The incident took place on a Sunday evening and resulted in multiple deaths and injuries.
Naveed Akram, 24, was identified as a suspect early in the investigation. Another suspect, Sajid Akram, 50, who was Naveed’s father, was killed by police at the scene.
Police in New South Wales (NSW) said that the 24-year-old man has been charged with several offenses related to the mass shooting.
In total, 41 people, including four children, were hospitalized after the shooting.
The man has been charged with 59 offenses. These include committing a terrorist act, 15 counts of murder, and 40 counts of causing harm to people with the intent to murder.
During the shooting, two police officers were injured by gunfire. One officer is in critical but stable condition, while the other is stable.
Police have stated that the ages of those who died range from 10 to 87 years old.
Authorities have called the shooting a terror-related incident, and believe that antisemitism was a motive.
Among the victims were a 10-year-old girl named Matilda Poltavchenko, Rabbi Eli Schlanger, and a married couple, Boris and Sofia Gurman.
The shooting has sparked discussions among Australian leaders about the need for stricter gun control measures. It has also led to calls to combat the rise of antisemitism in the country.
