Sydney Attack: Officials Confirm Islamic Terror Link, Gun Control Debate Rekindled
Sydney, Australia – A recent mass shooting in Sydney, during a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, has been declared a terrorist attack inspired by the Islamic State, according to Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett. The attack, which tragically took the lives of 15 people, involved a father and son. The father, Sajid Akram, was killed by police, while his son is currently hospitalized.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that the assessment was based on evidence, including the presence of Islamic State flags found in the suspects’ vehicle. The Prime Minister visited Ahmed al Ahmed in hospital and said that he is “a true Australian hero”.
The incident has reignited the debate surrounding gun control in Australia. Albanese has suggested further tightening the nation’s already strict gun laws. The focus is on how the attackers were able to acquire weapons and carry out the attack.
The suspects’ recent travel to the Philippines is also under investigation. Authorities are working to determine the purpose and details of their trip.
In the wake of the tragedy, Australians have shown a strong sense of community and resilience. Record numbers have signed up to donate blood. Former Prime Minister John Howard, known for his 1996 gun law reforms, also visited the memorial site.
