Navy Triumphs Over Army in Historic Showdown
Landover, Md. — The latest Army-Navy football game proved to be a memorable one, with both teams entering the competition having achieved unprecedented success this season. Together, they boasted a total of 19 wins, setting a new record for their storied rivalry. Ultimately, it was Navy who clinched the most significant victory, securing their 20th win in a dramatic fashion.
Navy head coach Brian Newberry emphasized the importance of the game, stating, “I think they’re like us. We want to be significant. I think we both were this year, and because of that, maybe there was a little more significance and interest in this game.” The Midshipmen delivered a powerful performance, defeating No. 19 Army with a score of 31-13.
Quarterback Blake Horvath played a key role in Navy’s success, throwing for 107 yards, two passing touchdowns, and rushing for an impressive 204 yards and two more touchdowns. Navy’s victory also marked a welcome end to a two-game losing streak against their rivals.
Army’s Bryson Daily, who had a successful season and was recognized as a Heisman Trophy contender, struggled during the game. Although he threw a touchdown pass, he was intercepted three times as Army fell behind early and struggled to recover, finishing the game with just 65 passing yards.
Navy’s strong performance was underscored by their quick start. After receiving the opening kickoff, they drove down the field and scored on a 1-yard touchdown run by Horvath. Following his second touchdown pass to Brandon Chatman, they surged ahead 14-0. Though Daily managed to respond with a touchdown pass of his own, Army never regained momentum.
Excitement built as Navy continued to press their advantage. A pivotal moment came in the third quarter when Horvath connected with Eli Heidenreich for a 52-yard touchdown, further extending Navy’s lead and marking a standout moment in the game.
Navy’s victory also secured them the prestigious Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy, marking their first win in this series since 2019. “It’s hard nowadays, with the changes in college football, to really build a culture that’s built on love and trust. Those things take time,” Coach Newberry said, reflecting on the dedication required to succeed at the academy level.
As the season winds down, both teams look forward to bowl games, with Army scheduled to face Louisiana Tech in the Independence Bowl on December 28, while Navy will compete against Oklahoma in the Armed Forces Bowl on December 27.
The rivalry between these two teams remains one of the highlights of college football, showcasing not only athletic talent but also the spirit and commitment of the young men representing these storied institutions. With Navy’s recent victory, they have once again claimed the ultimate bragging rights, leaving a lasting impact on this historic competition.
