A Birmingham man has been charged in connection with several violent incidents, including a notorious mass shooting outside a nightclub. Damien McDaniel, 22, is currently in police custody and faces capital murder charges related to a shooting that occurred on July 13, which resulted in the deaths of four individuals and left ten others injured.
This isn’t McDaniel’s first brush with the law; he is also linked to another mass shooting that took place on September 21, claiming four lives and injuring 17. Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond described the September incident as a “hit,” suggesting that the shooters were paid to carry out the attack. Both incidents occurred outside nightclubs, raising concerns about safety in such venues.
Authorities believe McDaniel’s criminal activities extend beyond these two shootings. He is suspected of being involved in three additional shootings that took place over a span of days in August and September. Collectively, these violent acts are believed to have resulted in 11 fatalities and 29 injuries across five separate incidents.
In connection with the July mass shooting, 27-year-old Hatarius Woods has also been charged with capital murder. Investigations continue into several other individuals believed to have been involved in the September shooting as well.
During a recent press conference, Officer Truman Fitzgerald stated that McDaniel and Woods are responsible for approximately 30% of the homicides in Birmingham during the months of July through September. “These individuals started back in July, and they did not stop until September,” Fitzgerald noted, emphasizing that a small group of criminals can tarnish the city’s reputation.
As the investigation unfolds, the Birmingham community remains vigilant and hopeful for justice in the wake of these tragic events.
