Buffalo Bills Running Back James Cook Attends Mandatory Practices
In Orchard Park, New York, Buffalo Bills running back James Cook has chosen to attend the team’s mandatory three-day practices, setting aside any concerns regarding his contract. His decision allows him to avoid potential fines and keeps him in good standing with the team.
Coach Sean McDermott expressed support for Cook’s presence, stating, “Business is business at the end of the day, and I respect his decision to be here and be amongst the team. We need everyone to win.”
Cook’s attendance comes amid his push for a contract extension before entering the last year of his rookie deal. Last season, he was a standout player, tying for the NFL lead with 16 rushing touchdowns, a record that matches a Bills milestone set by O.J. Simpson. Cook had previously skipped the team’s six voluntary spring practices, hinting at his desire for a new deal.
Drafted in the second round of the 2022 draft from the University of Georgia, Cook is the younger brother of NFL veteran Dalvin Cook, known for his time with the Minnesota Vikings.
Back in February, Cook began to voice his intentions for a better contract on social media, posting “15 mill year” on Instagram. He later reinforced his stance during a podcast with former football players, emphasizing that running backs are undervalued and deserve to be compensated fairly.
Despite the ongoing discussions, General Manager Brandon Beane has noted that while they value Cook as a player, contract negotiations have not progressed as both sides hoped. Beane confirmed a pause in the talks to focus on the upcoming draft but reassured fans that there are no hard feelings and that they still aim to secure Cook’s future with the team.
Throughout the offseason, the Bills have signed multiple key players to lengthy contracts, leaving Cook in a different position. His impressive performance last season was complemented by a strategy shift in the Bills’ offense, which aimed to lessen quarterback Josh Allen’s rushing attempts to prevent injuries.
As Cook continues his journey with the Bills, fans hope to see him thrive in the upcoming season, potentially cementing his legacy within the team and the league.
