A Virginia man, Brad Spafford, has made headlines after pleading guilty in federal court to several serious charges. He was accused of stockpiling a record number of explosives, along with making alarming threats against politicians.
Authorities found about 150 pipe bombs and other dangerous devices at Spafford’s home near Norfolk during a raid last fall. He was charged with possessing an unregistered short-barreled rifle and unregistered destructive devices, which raised red flags about safety in the community.
Prosecutors revealed chilling details about Spafford’s behavior, including his use of a photo of former President Joe Biden for target practice. He allegedly mentioned that political assassinations should be revived and made alarming remarks about other political figures, hinting at violence.
The investigation into Spafford began in 2023 when a law enforcement informant alerted authorities to his stockpiling of weapons and ammo. During the search, agents discovered unstable explosive materials hidden in a freezer and inside a backpack with a provocative message.
Spafford has been held in custody since his arrest in December, with a judge deeming him a significant safety risk. Initially, he pleaded not guilty, but the seriousness of his actions, including a past explosives accident that cost him three fingers, raised concerns about his capability for danger.
Facing up to 10 years in prison for each charge, Spafford’s sentencing is set for December. As this case unfolds, it underscores the pressing issue of safety and the responsibility that comes with gun ownership and personal conduct in today’s society.
