A new U.S. Postal Service stamp honors the beloved actress Betty White, who is best known for her role in “The Golden Girls.” The unveiling of the stamp took place during a ceremony at the Los Angeles Zoo, a place that held special meaning for White throughout her life.
Onlookers cheered as the ceremony revealed the stamp, which features a portrait of White on a violet background accented with bubbly spots, reflecting her vibrant personality. The image captures her in a blue polka-dot blouse, complete with a playful pawprint earring peeking through her blond curls.
Artist Dale Stephanos, who designed the stamp, expressed his deep appreciation for White, stating that working on the artwork felt like creating a portrait of a family member. The illustration is based on a photo taken of White by Kwaku Alston in 2010.
During the ceremony, attendees enjoyed a performance of “Thank You for Being a Friend,” the iconic theme song from “The Golden Girls.” The lively atmosphere was enhanced by the sounds of birds, which would have delighted White, known for her love of animals.
Richard Lichtenstein, a member of the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association board, praised White’s dedication to animal welfare. He noted that she considered animals her children and generously supported the zoo since it opened in 1966 until her passing in December 2021, just weeks shy of her 100th birthday.
“Who didn’t love Betty White?” Lichtenstein remarked. He emphasized that her kindness and humor made a positive impact on many people. He pointed out that White’s contributions helped fund exhibits for various animals, including chimps and elephants, and that she set up a private foundation for zoo programs before her death.
Amber McReynolds, chair of the USPS board of governors, recognized White as an “American treasure,” underscoring her importance both to the zoo and the community. Attendees at the ceremony eagerly lined up to buy the new forever stamps, along with related merchandise, celebrating a legacy that continues to resonate with fans.
“This stamp is special because let’s face it, everybody loves Betty White,” concluded artist Stephanos, reflecting the enduring affection for the late actress.
