Belarus Opposition Leader Released After Years in Prison
VILNIUS, Lithuania — Siarhei Tsikhanouski, a notable figure in the Belarusian opposition, has made a surprising return to the public eye following his release from prison where he was held since 2020. At 46 years old, Tsikhanouski has undergone a dramatic transformation, dropping from 298 pounds to 174 pounds during his imprisonment.
Released alongside 13 other prisoners, he arrived in Lithuania, greeted by his wife, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, a leading figure in the Belarusian opposition who has been living in exile. In an emotional reunion, Tsikhanouski shared his first feelings of freedom while reflecting on the harsh realities he faced behind bars.
In an interview the day after his release, Tsikhanouski spoke about the torturous conditions he endured, revealing how prison officials repeatedly threatened him with prolonged confinement. He explained that he nearly forgot how to speak during his years in solitary confinement, often deprived of basic medical care and food.
“I barely received enough to survive,” he said. “Sometimes just two spoons of porridge on my plate. And I had no access to proper medical attention.”
Tsikhanouski, known for calling out the regime of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, was arrested as he attempted to challenge Lukashenko in the 2020 presidential election. His arrest, followed by a lengthy prison sentence, widely drew condemnation for being politically motivated.
His release comes after discussions between U.S. officials and the Belarusian government, signaling a potential thaw in relations. Tsikhanouski expressed gratitude toward former President Donald Trump, suggesting that U.S. pressure played a role in securing his release.
While Tsikhanouski has regained his freedom, many political prisoners remain behind bars, with over 1,177 still in custody according to human rights groups. Among them are notable figures such as Ales Bialiatski, a human rights activist, and Viktor Babaryka, Tsikhanouski’s main competitor in the 2020 election.
Reflecting on the situation, Tsikhanouski noted the importance of unity among opposition voices in Belarus. He emphasized his support for his wife’s leadership and expressed hope for a democratic future despite the challenges they face.
As Belarus continues to deal with its contentious political climate, Tsikhanouski’s story shines a light on the struggle for freedom and the impact of authoritarian regimes, highlighting the importance of international support for those standing against oppression.
Despite his ordeal, Tsikhanouski is optimistic that change is possible in Belarus, and he is eager to return to political activism and blogging. He remains cautious, however, as many observers believe Lukashenko will not relinquish power easily, raising questions about the future of Belarus’s fight for democracy.
