Barry Sanders Discusses Heart Health After Personal Scare
MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich. — Legendary former NFL running back Barry Sanders recently opened up about the importance of heart health following a heart attack he experienced last year. Known for his humble attitude, Sanders made headlines not just for his impressive football career but also for his decision to retire just before beating rushing records.
In a recent interview, Sanders shared that he never focused on stats during his time in the league. “It never was a driver for me,” he stated, reflecting on his choice to retire rather than chase the all-time rushing record.
Now, nearly 15 months after his health scare, Sanders is stepping up as an advocate for heart health. He emphasizes the need for everyone to discuss their cardiovascular health with their doctors, specifically urging people to check their LDL cholesterol levels, which is known to be harmful.
“Heart disease affects so many of us,” Sanders remarked. “Almost everyone knows someone impacted by it.” His message is clear: having a conversation with your healthcare provider can make a significant difference.
Last Father’s Day, Sanders experienced a severe burning sensation in his chest, prompting him to drive himself to the hospital. Doctors confirmed it was a heart attack, leading to several days in the hospital and a subsequent treatment plan to manage his health.
To raise awareness, Sanders has partnered with Amgen Inc., a biotechnology company, creating a documentary and engaging in interviews to highlight the importance of heart health.
With a remarkable career that includes 15,269 rushing yards and numerous accolades — including an MVP award and multiple Pro Bowl selections — Sanders remains a beloved figure in football. He was drafted by the Detroit Lions with the No. 3 overall pick in 1989 after winning the Heisman Trophy at Oklahoma State.
As he continues his advocacy, Sanders hopes to inspire others to prioritize their health and well-being.
