Commuter Rail Halted After Barcelona Train Incident
GELIDA, Spain – Rail service in Catalonia, Spain, is currently suspended after a commuter train accident near Barcelona. The incident, which occurred Tuesday night, resulted in one fatality and injured 37 others.
Authorities report that the train collided with a retaining wall that had fallen onto the tracks. Preliminary investigations suggest heavy rainfall this week may have contributed to the wall’s collapse. The victim was identified as a trainee train driver, and most of the injuries occurred in the first car of the train.
This incident follows closely on the heels of Sunday’s high-speed rail disaster in southern Spain.
The suspension of commuter trains is causing significant traffic congestion in the Barcelona area. Officials are advising residents to limit travel.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his condolences to the victims and their families. While Spain’s high-speed rail network has generally been reliable, commuter services have faced challenges.
