A Republican House member has voiced strong criticism of former President Donald Trump’s recent remarks on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, calling some of his statements “dumb.”
In a post on Truth Social, Trump criticized both Russian President Vladimir Putin, describing him as “absolutely CRAZY!” and accusing him of “needlessly killing” people. However, he then turned his focus to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, stating, “Everything out of his mouth causes problems, I don’t like it, and it better stop.”
Rep. Don Bacon from Nebraska responded to these comments, expressing that while he agrees with the first part of Trump’s message, the latter portion concerning Zelenskyy is misguided. Bacon noted, “Trump is attacking President Zelensky while Putin bombs Ukrainian cities, and it is hurting his credibility.” He emphasized the importance of maintaining a clear moral stance in light of Russia’s aggression.
Bacon advocates for strong support of Ukraine, suggesting that the U.S. and its allies should provide substantial military aid, impose stringent sanctions on Russia, and seize Russian assets abroad. He stated, “It’s a time for honesty. Peace talks are having no effect on Putin. His goal is to dominate Ukraine and he won’t stop until he realizes he can’t win.”
In a recent update, Zelenskyy reported on the significant attacks Ukraine has faced, detailing that the Russian military launched its largest wave of drone strikes since the beginning of the war, injuring civilians and damaging infrastructure. He reiterated the belief that halting these assaults requires a show of strength from the U.S. and its allies.
While opinions on the conflict may vary, the call for a united and strong response to Russian aggression remains a common sentiment among many Republican leaders.
