A man suspected of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has been arrested, according to police sources. The suspect has been named as Luigi Mangione
The arrest took place after a McDonald’s employee in Altoona, Pennsylvania, noticed the man acting suspiciously and alerted the police. Authorities discovered that he was carrying a firearm similar to the one used in Thompson’s shooting, as well as a silencer and a fake New Jersey identification that he allegedly used to check into a hostel on the Upper West Side, where the shooter is believed to have stayed.
As of noon on Monday, the Altoona police were holding the suspect for questioning. A law enforcement insider stated that the suspect had a “manifesto” with him at the time of his arrest.
It has been reported that the suspect used the name “Marc Rosario” on his fake identification.
Authorities have indicated that the suspect may have specifically targeted Thompson. He reportedly followed Thompson to an investors’ conference at the New York Hilton Midtown on December 4, where, at around 6:45 a.m., he fired multiple shots at Thompson’s back and leg. Thompson was declared dead later that morning.
After the shooting, the suspect fled the scene on a bicycle, managing to escape into Central Park.
While a clear motive for the shooting has not been established, bullet casings found at the scene contained engravings with the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose.” These engravings are reminiscent of a well-known phrase that criticizes certain practices in the insurance industry regarding claims, often summarized as “delay, deny, defend.”
