A Democratic candidate for the Arizona Senate, John McLean, tragically lost his life in a DUI-related crash in Tucson early Friday morning. He was 68 years old. According to the Tucson Police Department, the accident occurred when a 27-year-old man, Michael Martin Creel, allegedly ran a stop sign and collided with McLean’s vehicle. Creel is now in custody at the Pima County Jail, facing charges of manslaughter and aggravated DUI.
Unfortunately, McLean died at the scene, and investigators noted that excessive speed and impairment were likely factors in the collision. Reports indicate that Creel had previously faced DUI charges, which were dismissed in December 2023.
The Arizona Senate Democrats expressed their sorrow over McLean’s death, stating, “We are heartbroken to hear about the passing of LD17 Senate Candidate John McLean. He spent his final days fighting for a better Arizona, and we could not be more thankful for his work and dedication to our great state. We extend our deepest sympathies to John’s family and loved ones.”
McLean was in a race against Republican Vince Leach for the District 17 Senate seat. Leach also shared his condolences, mentioning, “My thoughts and prayers are with the McLean family for their tragic loss. John was a good man who conducted himself honorably as a candidate.”
Just hours before the crash, McLean had conceded the election to Leach, who was leading by over 3,000 votes. In his concession, McLean reflected on his campaign work and expressed pride in the efforts put forth by his team.
State Senator Mitzi Epstein and Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs also paid tribute to McLean, highlighting his commitment to public service and the impact he had on his community. Hobbs called the incident a “tragic loss,” sharing her heartbreak for McLean’s family.
The investigation into the crash is still ongoing as authorities work to gather more details.
