A man from Washington, D.C., has admitted in court that he killed his girlfriend last year.
Pernell Sims, who is 35 years old, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for the death of Tyshida Williams. He will find out his punishment in March, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.
Prosecutors said that on July 30, 2023, Sims and Williams were together when he got upset about something on her phone.
They went to the lobby and parking garage of Sims’ apartment building and argued for over an hour. Prosecutors stated that in the parking garage, Sims threw Williams to the ground and kicked her in the chest.
Afterward, they went back to Sims’ apartment, where his child was present, and closed the door.
Prosecutors said that Sims then shot Williams in the head. She later died from her injuries.
News station WUSA reported that Williams’ death was first thought to be a suicide, but it was later changed to a homicide. Sims was arrested in November 2023 and has been in jail since then.
Prosecutors said that Sims admitted he shot Williams on purpose and was not defending himself.
Sims is scheduled to be sentenced in March.
