In Tangerang, Indonesia, Ramadan is a special time that emphasizes community and family bonding among Muslims. As the sun sets, families come together to break their fast in a spirit of unity and gratitude. In a country where about 90% of the 282 million population practice Islam, the month of Ramadan is celebrated with various cultural traditions and activities.
Recently, a torchlight parade took place in Tangerang, just outside Jakarta, to welcome the beginning of Ramadan. Many local residents, including Samsul Anwar, his wife Rekanita Amelia Yusuf, and their young nephew Argha Al Khawarizmi, joined in the festivities. This traditional event, known as Tarhib Ramadan, involved participants carrying torches and enjoying lively Islamic music played with the rebana, a traditional percussion instrument.
The celebration also showcased Indonesia’s spirit of inclusiveness. Community members, including those from Chinese Indonesian backgrounds, participated by performing the “barongsai,” or lion dance, a vibrant element of their cultural celebrations. This blend of cultures adds to the festive atmosphere, making the occasion even more special.
“Every year, we honor Ramadan with traditions that have been passed down through generations,” Samsul shared. The next day, he actively continued the observance by honoring his relatives at their gravesites, scattering flower petals, and engaging in prayer for those who have passed away.
On a sunny Friday afternoon, Anwar and his family joined others at the Cisadane River for a significant tradition. They washed their hair with rice straw shampoo, symbolizing spiritual cleansing and purity as they prepared for the month of fasting ahead. Anwar articulated the deeper meanings behind these customs: “Each tradition in welcoming Ramadan is about purifying ourselves, praying for one another, and strengthening our friendships.”
As the holy month of Ramadan unfolds, communities in Indonesia, marked by their rich diversity and traditions, come together in a shared spirit of respect and celebration.
