Ruben Amorim, the head coach of Manchester United, has expressed his desire to keep key players Casemiro and Harry Maguire at the club beyond the current season. Their contracts are set to expire at the end of this season.
Speaking at a press conference before the Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur, Amorim addressed questions about the future of these players. He emphasized that his current focus is on the present season and securing positive results.
“We don’t know what is going to happen,” Amorim stated. “My goal is to continue to count with Casemiro, with Harry Maguire. I don’t know what is going to happen, but let’s focus on this on this season. I’m really happy with Casemiro. It’s really important. I’m really happy with Harry. But I know what you guys are asking. Let’s focus on this season and then we’ll see in the next season.”
When asked about the team’s potential to exceed expectations this season, Amorim conveyed optimism. He highlighted the unpredictable nature of the league, noting how quickly circumstances can change. He stressed the importance of focusing on each game and striving for victory.
“What I think is that we can win any game,” he said. “If we have this opportunity, let’s make everything to win. Let’s try to address every detail to try to win every game.”
He acknowledged that a recent setback in a previous game offered a learning opportunity. Amorim explained that the team discussed how they could have approached the second half differently to maintain their advantage. He reiterated that the immediate goal is to win against Tottenham, a feat he believes is achievable.
Amorim also addressed concerns about forward Benjamin Sesko’s recent goal-scoring record. While acknowledging that Sesko might be feeling pressure, he expressed confidence in the young player’s long-term potential.
“Yeah, I’m relaxed,” he answered. “He’s not relaxed. What I mean is that I understand how things are in football. And he’s going to struggle. That is normal. He has no experience here. And then the first impact, when everyone says that you are so good, you are the next big thing, and you hear about that with Sesko, and then you come to one club that is the hardest club. If you don’t perform every week, you are going to hear a lot of things from club legends, for pundits, for the media, and sometimes they are right.”
He emphasized the challenges faced by young players adapting to a new environment and the scrutiny that comes with playing for a high-profile club. He said that Sesko has the potential and is working hard.
Regarding comments made by former player Gary Neville about Sesko’s performance, Amorim acknowledged that such criticism can be difficult to hear. He advised Sesko to view it as a part of the process and to maintain his confidence. Amorim said that the club would continue to support and protect Sesko.
Reflecting on a past final loss to Tottenham, Amorim acknowledged the importance of club stability and support for the manager. He recognized his own fortunate position at Manchester United and the backing he receives.
“It’s completely different,” he responded. “I said already, I’m really lucky to be here. I know that. It’s important for someone to understand how lucky I am to have this opportunity.”
The match between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur is scheduled to kick off at 12:30 GMT.
