Amazon is set to discontinue a program that allowed Prime members to share their free shipping benefits with others not living at the same address. Starting October 1, users outside the primary household will need to subscribe to their own Prime membership, as announced on the company’s website.
To encourage this transition, Amazon is offering a special deal: a one-year subscription for $14.99. After the first year, the monthly fee is $14.99 or $139 annually. This promotion will run until December 31, 2025.
The Prime Invitee program will be replaced with a new offering called Amazon Family. This will allow account holders to share free two-day shipping and additional perks, including exclusive deals and streaming access, but only with one other adult in their household. Up to four teenagers and four child profiles can also be added.
This decision comes as Amazon invests heavily in enhancing its delivery infrastructure, aiming to provide faster service to less populated areas across the United States. The company plans to expand services to 1,000 of the more than 4,000 targeted smaller cities and rural communities by the end of the year.
