Sister of Murder Victim Discusses Impact Statement at Sentencing
During a recent interview on Good Morning America, Alivea Goncalves shared her thoughts on the impactful statement she made at the sentencing of Bryan Kohberger. Kohberger was sentenced to four life terms in prison for the tragic 2022 murders of Alivea’s sister, Kaylee Goncalves, and three other University of Idaho students.
On July 23, Kohberger received his sentence for the murders of Kaylee, aged 21, Maddie Mogen, also 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, 20. In her emotional statement, Alivea directly addressed Kohberger, expressing her anger and sorrow over the loss of her sister. “If you hadn’t attacked them in their sleep, Kaylee would have kicked your ass,” she declared.
Reflecting on her powerful words, she admitted that she feared repercussions for what she said. “I was prepared to be arrested that day,” Alivea recalled, noting that many family members felt the same tension while standing in court.
Driven by the anger she saw on Kohberger’s face, Alivea was determined to deliver her message strongly. “It was important to make him feel small, because he is,” she explained. She practiced her statement in advance, wanting to maintain eye contact with Kohberger. “I had one shot at it, and I was going to make the most of it,” she emphasized.
Alivea also mentioned she had researched Kohberger extensively before the sentencing, stating, “I stalked the stalker. I found everything that I could online.” This preparation fueled her determination to confront him about his actions.
She recounted that her sister, Kaylee, had expressed concern about someone watching her before the tragedy occurred. Others close to Kaylee reported similar fears, highlighting troubling signs leading up to the incident.
During her speech, Alivea contrasted the victims with Kohberger, describing them as “loved, accepted, vibrant, accomplished,” and labeled him as “painfully average.” She concluded her statement with a powerful reminder of their worth, saying, “You aren’t profound, you’re pathetic.”
After the sentencing, Alivea compared her encounter with Kohberger to being “face to face with an alien.” She shared that, while she wasn’t intimidated, her instincts warned her of the danger he posed.
Alivea’s words resonate with many, showcasing the pain and strength of those affected by violent crime.
