A mother from Alaska has been charged after reportedly leaving her young child alone in a car while she went to a hotel.
The Alaska Department of Public Safety stated that 38-year-old Lillian Johnson was arrested for endangering her child’s well-being.
On March 18, dispatchers received a call from a concerned passerby who heard a child crying in a parked car at a hotel and bar in Healy. When the state troopers arrived, they found a 20-month-old child left alone inside the vehicle, which was turned off and had a window slightly open. The outside temperature was only 6 degrees Fahrenheit.
Emergency medical services were called to the scene and treated the child for early signs of hypothermia. The child was then taken by medics to the local EMS/Fire Department for further care.
Troopers mentioned that they could not initially locate the mother when the child was taken for medical attention. However, she later appeared at the hotel after the emergency team had left with her child.
An investigation revealed that Johnson was inside the hotel for approximately 35 minutes, from about 8:18 p.m. to 8:53 p.m., while she had a romantic meeting with someone at the hotel.
The authorities are still looking into the situation and have not provided any updates about the child’s condition. It is important to note that babies can easily suffer from hypothermia, which occurs when their body temperature falls below 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Signs of hypothermia in infants may include cold skin, limpness, and blotchy skin.
