Actress Aimee Lou Wood has expressed her displeasure over a recent parody of her character from the show “The White Lotus” featured on the popular sketch show “Saturday Night Live” (SNL). The parody, titled “White Potus,” aired on April 12 and depicted various public figures in a humorous scenario set in a hotel similar to that in “The White Lotus.”
In the sketch, Wood’s character, Chelsea, is brought to life by SNL cast member Sarah Sherman, who portrays her with exaggerated, cartoonish features. Aimee Lou Wood, 31, took to Instagram on April 13 to share her thoughts, stating that she found the portrayal to be “mean and unfunny.” She noted it was disappointing because she had enjoyed watching the show just weeks earlier.
Wood mentioned, “Yes, humor is part of the show, but couldn’t it be done in a smarter and less cheap way?” This reflects her desire for more thoughtful comedy that doesn’t rely on mocking individuals.
Following her post, Wood received a flood of supportive messages from fans. She later shared that she had received apologies from SNL regarding the portrayal, although she did not specify who reached out.
In the past, Wood has discussed her insecurities about her appearance, particularly her teeth, which she worried might impact her chances of getting roles in American television. Contrary to her fears, she revealed that she received countless encouraging messages after landing her role on Netflix’s “Sex Education,” with many fans relating to her look.
She recalled how some fans felt empowered by her appearance, saying, “People have said, ‘You’ve got teeth like mine,’ which made them feel cool.” Wood embraces her distinct features, feeling a sense of rebellion against the Hollywood beauty standards that often dominate the industry.
The “SNL” sketch also featured other notable figures, including Jon Hamm and Scarlett Johansson, who reprised her impression of Ivanka Trump, highlighting the ongoing blend of politics and entertainment.
