Utah State Dominates Wyoming in Decisive Victory
Logan, Utah – In a Wednesday night game, Utah State University’s basketball team secured a resounding win against the University of Wyoming, with a final score of 94-62. The game, held at Utah State’s home court, The Spectrum, saw the Aggies achieve their largest margin of victory ever against the Cowboys in a series that dates back to 1930.
The student section, known as The HURD, showed their support by organizing a “pinkout,” filling the stands with pink attire. From the start, Utah State set the tone, going on a 13-0 run in the first four minutes. This early momentum forced Wyoming’s head coach, Sundance Wicks, to call a timeout in an attempt to regroup his team. However, the Aggies maintained control throughout the game.
Utah State’s head coach, Jerrod Calhoun, expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance. “I was really proud of our guys’ effort tonight,” Calhoun said. “I thought we did an incredible job of creating advantages and playing for each other.”
A key player in the victory was Utah State’s Kolby King. Coming off the bench, King contributed a season-high 20 points, including four successful 3-point shots. As a team, Utah State shot an impressive 55% from the field.
King praised the coaching staff’s strategy for the game. “Coach had an amazing game plan for this game to get into the middle of the paint and kick out for threes. And we had great space tonight,” King explained. He also noted the team’s strong shooting performance, going 6 for 9 from the field and 4 of 6 from 3-point range, while also securing a team-high seven rebounds in his 25 minutes on the court.
Utah State demonstrated excellent teamwork, achieving 28 assists while keeping turnovers to a minimum with only five. This was achieved against Wyoming’s defensive strategy, which created opportunities for Utah State to make shots from the corners. In the first half, Utah State made 8 of 16 3-point attempts, finishing the game with 13 of 34.
Alongside King, other players made significant contributions. Mason Falslev had 12 points and five assists, and Adlan Elamin added nine points and five rebounds, helping Utah State build a 50-28 lead by halftime. Garry Clark scored 13 points and had five rebounds, while Tucker Anderson added 11 points with three 3-pointers.
MJ Collins Jr., Utah State’s leading scorer, added 12 points and four assists, making half of his field goal attempts. Calhoun praised Collins Jr.’s unselfish play, noting his encouragement of teammate Kolby King throughout the game.
Utah State showed their dominance in several areas, outscoring Wyoming 14-2 on fast breaks and overwhelming the Cowboys in bench points 54-13. Rebounding was even at 36-36.
For Wyoming, Leland Walker scored 24 points with four 3-pointers, but Nasir Meyer was the only other Cowboy to reach double figures. Wyoming struggled with their shooting, making only 35% of their shots and 8 of 32 from 3-point range.
After Wyoming scored the game’s first basket, Utah State quickly took control, scoring 15 of the next 17 points, thanks to strong play from Falslev and Elamin. The crowd of over 10,000 fans enthusiastically supported the Aggies.
Following a previous loss to UNLV where they lost a lead, Utah State ensured a different outcome by quickly extending their lead after halftime. Three turnovers on Wyoming’s first three possessions led to a 12-2 run, pushing Utah State ahead 62-30 early in the second half.
Looking ahead, Utah State is preparing for a game against San Diego State. Coach Calhoun emphasized the importance of managing player minutes to ensure the team is fresh for upcoming challenges.
