Heavy Snowfall and Rain Cause Tragedy in Afghanistan
KABUL – Recent heavy snow and rainfall have caused significant hardship in Afghanistan. Government officials say that over 60 people have died, and more than 100 have been injured across the country over the last three days.
The disaster management authority stated that many homes have been damaged or destroyed. Hundreds of animals, vital for many families’ livelihoods, have also perished. These losses are reported across 15 of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces.
Afghanistan’s infrastructure challenges make it difficult to respond quickly to these disasters, especially in remote areas. The impact of natural disasters is made worse by deforestation.
The eastern provinces continue to struggle after earthquakes last year. Many families who lost their homes in those earthquakes are now facing the harsh winter weather without proper shelter.
International organizations have said they are working to provide aid to the country.
