Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas recently called on Hamas to disarm, give up control, and free hostages taken during recent conflicts. He suggested that releasing the hostages would eliminate what he described as Israel’s rationale for continuing the ongoing war, which escalated following the brutal attacks by Hamas on October 7, 2023.
Abbas emphasized the urgent need to end what he termed a “war of extermination” in Gaza, highlighting the daily loss of life in the region. He questioned why Hamas has not yet handed over the hostages, expressing that doing so would help restore some peace.
During his remarks at a meeting of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Central Council, Abbas reportedly criticized Hamas harshly, referring to them in derogatory terms. This meeting was significant as it was the first instance since the outbreak of the current conflict that Abbas publicly urged Hamas to transfer its authority back to the Palestinian Authority.
Despite Abbas’ call for Hamas to yield power, it remains uncertain whether they will comply. The two groups have been in conflict since Hamas seized control of Gaza in 2006, pushing out the Palestinian Authority. There have been efforts from the international community to include the PA in future plans for governance in Gaza, but these proposals have not received a warm response from Israel.
Abbas’s appeals reflect a complicated political landscape as the Palestinian Authority tries to reassert its role amid the chaos. The Israeli government has long criticized the PA for its controversial funding policies related to prisoners and their families connected to attacks against Israelis.
This continued strife highlights the challenges facing not only the Palestinian leadership but also the region as a whole, raising questions about the future of governance and stability in Gaza.
