This passing comes shortly after the death of Mysterio’s brother, Roberto Gutierrez, who died on November 17 at the age of 76.
Mysterio Sr. started his career as a boxer before entering professional wrestling in 1976. He competed for several wrestling promotions, including Pro Wrestling Revolution and Tijuana Wrestling. His breakout moment came when he represented Mexico at WCW’s Starrcade pay-per-view in 1990, which helped elevate his status in the wrestling community.
Throughout his career, Mysterio Sr. captured multiple championships, including the Revolution Tag Team Championship and the IWC World Middleweight Championship. He also played a significant role in training future wrestling stars, including his son and nephew, helping shape the next generation of talent.
Despite retiring in 2009 and being inducted into the Tijuana Sports Hall of Fame in 2006, he was still active in the ring until as recently as 2023. Rey Misterio Sr. will be remembered fondly by his family, fans, and the wrestling community.
