Céline Dion recently took a moment to honor her late husband, René Angélil, on what would have marked their 30th wedding anniversary. Angélil passed away from throat cancer on January 14, 2016, just two days shy of his 74th birthday.
In a touching post on Instagram, Dion shared a beautiful photo from their wedding day in 1994. The picture captures a young Dion in her wedding gown, gazing lovingly at Angélil, who was her manager and eventually became her husband. It showcased a sweet, intimate moment that exemplified their deep connection.
Dion expressed her emotions in the caption, stating, “You still fill our hearts, every day. You are everything for us. We miss you so much. Happy 30th anniversary, mon amour.” She made sure to include well wishes from herself and their three children: René-Charles, and the 14-year-old twins, Nelson and Eddy.
The couple first crossed paths in 1980 when a young 12-year-old Dion sang for Angélil during an audition. He became her manager, and after working together for seven years, their friendship blossomed into romance in 1987. Dion was initially hesitant to reveal their relationship due to concerns about public perception but later embraced their love, eventually wanting to share their joy with the world.
They married on December 17, 1994, in a lavish ceremony at Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal, which was broadcast live across Canada. Dion reflected on that special day in a recent interview, stating, “This is a moment that will be with me for the rest of my life. The dress couldn’t have been big enough. He [Angélil] was, and still is, such a wonderful human being.”
The couple faced challenges, including Angélil’s diagnosis of throat cancer four years after they wed. He was declared cancer-free in 2000, but sadly the illness returned in 2014, two years before his passing.
Today, Dion continues to cherish Angélil’s memory, stating, “I’m still married to René. He’s still my husband. He will always be.” She keeps his pictures displayed throughout their home and often travels for treatment, bringing along his photos to feel his presence.
Céline Dion’s love story with René Angélil remains a poignant reminder of enduring love, even in the face of sorrow.
