Former U.S. ambassador to El Salvador, Ronald Johnson, has been chosen by President-elect Donald Trump to become the ambassador to Mexico in his upcoming administration. This announcement was shared on Trump’s Truth Social platform.
Johnson is expected to collaborate closely with Marco Rubio, Trump’s nominee for Secretary of State, focusing on enhancing national security and advancing pro-American foreign policies. Trump underscored Johnson’s previous experience, stating that during his time as ambassador to El Salvador, he played a vital role in reducing both violent crime and illegal immigration to historic lows.
Bringing a strong background to the position, Johnson previously served as an officer with the CIA and as a U.S. Army Green Beret. His appointment is seen as significant within the Trump administration.
Notably, Trump has indicated that if Mexico does not take stronger actions to control the influx of illegal immigrants and drugs into the United States, steep tariffs could be imposed. This could also extend to Canada and China, which are similarly under scrutiny for their roles in these issues.
In his announcement, Trump stated that Johnson’s mission will be to help eliminate “migrant crime” and put a stop to the illegal flow of dangerous drugs like Fentanyl into the country, aiming to “MAKE AMERICA SAFE AGAIN.”
