Police have discovered a three-page document, referred to as a “manifesto,” from Luigi Mangione, the man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Reports indicate that the manifesto was found on Mangione at the time of his arrest and contains a statement claiming that the murder “had to be done.”
Mangione is currently facing murder charges and is held in Pennsylvania. His arrest came after a six-day search that started in New York City. Authorities caught up with him at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, where they reportedly found a “ghost gun,” a silencer, fake IDs, and the manifesto.
According to a law enforcement source, the manifesto includes a message from Mangione stating, “To the Feds, I’ll keep this short, because I do respect what you do for our country. To save you a lengthy investigation, I state plainly that I wasn’t working with anyone.” He also expressed remorse for the situation, saying, “I do apologize for any strife or traumas, but it had to be done,” adding, “Frankly, these parasites had it coming.”
Mangione was reported to be acting suspiciously at the McDonald’s, wearing a mask and looking at a computer, which led a customer to alert the staff. Police were then called to the scene.
Thompson was tragically shot and killed outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel as he was heading to an investor event. Videos from the day of the incident reportedly show a masked man firing multiple shots at him.
Additionally, shell casings from the scene were found with marked phrases like “deny,” “defend,” and “depose,” which may refer to a strategy used in the insurance industry known as “deny, delay, defend.”
In Pennsylvania, Mangione faces further charges after officers discovered a gun and he presented a fake ID. He has not yet entered a plea for these charges.
