UnitedHealth Group is mourning the tragic loss of Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, who was fatally shot in a targeted attack in New York City early Wednesday, December 4. The company expressed its sorrow, stating, “We are deeply saddened and shocked at the passing of our dear friend and colleague Brian Thompson. He was highly regarded by all who worked with him.”
The statement also mentioned that they are working closely with the New York Police Department (NYPD) during this difficult time and extended their condolences to Thompson’s family and loved ones.
Thompson, aged 50, was shot by a masked assailant outside the Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan around 6:45 a.m. as he was approaching the hotel for an investors’ conference. NYPD officials indicated that the shooter had been waiting outside for several minutes before Thompson arrived.
Witnesses reported that the gunman fired multiple shots at Thompson before escaping on a Citi Bike, heading towards Central Park. He was later declared dead at a local hospital.
The suspect is described as a male with light skin, wearing a light brown or cream jacket and a distinctive grey backpack. Police are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to his arrest. Officials stated that this incident seemed to be a calculated attack rather than random violence.
Thompson’s wife, Pauley, shared that her husband had received threats prior to the incident, though details were unclear. He is survived by Pauley and their two children, and the family resided in Maple Grove, Minnesota.
Brian Thompson was appointed CEO of UnitedHealthcare in April 2021 after leading the company’s government programs, including Medicare, since joining the organization in 2004.
