The iconic Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting in Manhattan is going ahead as planned on Wednesday evening, despite the tragic murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, which occurred mere blocks away.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch addressed the media earlier in the day, reassuring the public that “millions will be attending the tree lighting and other festive events, and the NYPD will be present to ensure their safety.”
A significant police presence will be deployed around Rockefeller Center, particularly in the area where Thompson, 50, was fatally shot early Wednesday morning near the Hilton Hotel.
Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey confirmed, “We will have a robust police presence from 52nd Street down to 47th Street.” He emphasized that, despite this terrible incident, New Yorkers should feel comfortable enjoying the holiday festivities.
The tree lighting ceremony is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., with the actual lighting expected closer to 10 p.m. Assistant Commissioner for Public Information Carlos Nieves mentioned that the event typically draws ample police staffing.
Nieves explained that the NYPD routinely deploys various units including K9s and aviation support during high-profile events. “We always maintain a heightened state of alert for occasions like the tree lighting and the Thanksgiving Day Parade,” he added.
Tragically, Thompson was shot at about 6:45 a.m. on Wednesday by a gunman who had been waiting for him outside the Hilton as he arrived for a work event. While he was quickly taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, he was pronounced dead shortly after.
Authorities believe the shooting was deliberate, with the suspect escaping on an electric bike into Central Park. The investigation into the motive is ongoing, as police said it appears that Thompson was specifically targeted, though the reasons remain unclear at this time.
In light of the situation, Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of $10,000 for any information leading to an arrest. Despite the somber events, the community looks forward to coming together tonight in the spirit of the season.
