Senator Joe Manchin, an Independent from West Virginia, delivered a heartfelt farewell speech on the Senate floor, marking the conclusion of his 14 years in office. Manchin, who chose not to seek re-election, spoke on the importance of unity and expressed gratitude for having represented his state.
In his emotional remarks, Manchin stated, “Today, I rise with a full heart and an overwhelming sense of gratitude. It has been an honor of my life to represent West Virginia in this great country.” He emphasized his enduring faith in the Senate and its potential for positive change, even as he prepares to step away.
Throughout his speech, Manchin called for cooperation among legislators, urging his colleagues to put aside their partisan differences. He reflected on his unexpected journey to the Senate, explaining that he saw an opportunity to serve and confront significant challenges.
The senator shared his belief that divisions within Congress were deep and detrimental. He recalled being asked to help recruit Democratic candidates against Republicans but decided against undermining his fellow lawmakers. “How do we expect to work together if I’m working against them?” he questioned.
Manchin also took the time to highlight his achievements for West Virginia, focusing on issues such as energy development, infrastructure improvements, and job growth. His political career spans decades, including roles as a state delegate, state senator, Secretary of State, and governor before being elected to the Senate in 2010.
Known for his moderate stance, Manchin left the Democratic Party to register as an Independent in May 2024 but continued to collaborate with Democrats. He concluded his address by urging his fellow senators to work towards resolving pressing issues, like inflation and the crisis at the southern border.
“I’m not going anywhere,” he declared, becoming emotional as he thanked his staff and family for their years of support. Senator Chuck Schumer, the Senate Majority Leader, praised Manchin for his contributions and friendship, acknowledging their bond even amidst disagreements.
