General Motors is recalling over 132,000 heavy-duty pickups in the United States due to an issue with tailgate release switches. These switches can malfunction and cause the tailgates to open unexpectedly while the trucks are parked, which poses a safety risk.
This latest recall includes specific models of the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 trucks, adding to a previous February recall that involved 323,000 vehicles. The trucks affected are those equipped with a manual tailgate along with a power lock and release feature.
The problem arises when water gets into the electronic systems of the gate release switches, leading to unexpected unlatched tailgates. Such occurrences can result in cargo falling onto the road, creating a safety hazard. Following reports of 237 instances where tailgates opened without warning, the company decided to extend the recall.
Until the necessary repairs are completed, GM advises truck owners to ensure their tailgates are properly closed and latched before driving. To address the issue, dealers will replace the problematic touchpad switch assemblies with upgraded versions that are better equipped to prevent water intrusion.
Notifications to vehicle owners regarding this recall will begin on January 13.
