GREENVILLE — Efforts to build a new 10,000-seat stadium in Mauldin have gained traction as public and private partners are seeking $14 million from Greenville County to help fund the project.
The planned stadium will be located next to the newly opened Bridgeway Station, which features an Italian village theme and is situated just off Interstate 385. The overall cost of the stadium is estimated to be between $80 million and $100 million. Once completed, it will serve as the home for the Greenville Triumph minor league soccer team and the Liberty women’s team, as well as host various events like festivals and concerts.
So far, private investors have contributed around $45 million toward the stadium’s construction, along with $4 million from the city of Mauldin and $10 million from the state. If the county grants the requested funding, the total investment would reach approximately $74 million.
Joe Erwin, Chairman of Triumph and Liberty, mentioned that plans to break ground next year will continue regardless of the county’s decision. However, he emphasized that additional public support would help enhance the stadium’s features, such as more locker rooms, a field protection system, and private boxes, which would make it more suitable for hosting major events, such as NCAA soccer tournaments.
This isn’t the first time they’ve approached the county for assistance with a stadium. Back in 2022, the Greenville County finance committee voted against a request for $20 million that would have kickstarted the initial plans. At that time, estimates for the entire project were around $40 million, but rising costs due to inflation and an expanded vision for the stadium have increased the figure.
Private investors are now contributing significantly more than before and are requesting a smaller amount from the county in hotel tax revenue, which is primarily earmarked for tourism-related expenses.
Erwin, along with Mauldin Mayor Terry Merritt, advocated for the county’s investment during a finance committee meeting on November 18. The committee is expected to vote soon on whether to forward the proposal to the full county council for consideration.
Once the stadium is complete, it will be owned by Mauldin, with the Triumph serving as the main tenant, similar to the arrangement the Swamp Rabbit hockey team has with the Bon Secours Wellness Arena owned by Greenville County.
