Here is a summary of the Mauldin City Council meeting held on November 18.
### Initial Approval: Bond Issue for Stadium Construction
The Council gave initial approval for a bond issue that would provide up to $4.25 million to help build a new stadium for Greenville Pro Soccer at BridgeWay Station. This new multipurpose stadium, designed to seat 10,000 people, will be the home of the Greenville Triumph SC and Greenville Liberty. The overall cost of the stadium is projected to be between $80 million and $100 million, which will include $45 million from private investors and $10 million from the state. Additionally, Greenville Pro Soccer is requesting $14 million from the hospitality and accommodations tax fund in Greenville County. The final vote on this proposal will take place on December 16.
### Initial Approval: Property Sale for East Butler Improvement Project
In another decision, the Council approved the sale of part of Maverick Station’s property at the intersection of East Butler Road and Highway 276 to the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT). This land will be part of the Butler Road Improvement Project, which aims to improve stormwater management and intersections, as well as create a 10-foot-wide multi-use path. If the sale is finalized, Maverick Station will lose some parking spaces, and adjustments will be needed for the water vault and sign. The city will receive $189,750 from SCDOT, which will go towards creating additional public parking. This matter will also be revisited for final approval on December 16.
### Final Approval: Sewer Ordinance Updates
The Council approved updates to the city’s utility ordinance to specify the responsibilities for maintaining sewer laterals located on private properties. Property owners will now be responsible for the upkeep of these sewer lines. The new rules allow owners to request the city’s assistance for maintenance and repairs, but they will have to cover the associated costs. Once these repairs are completed, the city will take over ownership of the sewer lateral.
### Approved: City Administrator Contract Extension
Lastly, the Council approved an extension to City Administrator Seth Duncan’s contract, which will now run until December 2027. Duncan has been in his position since November 2022.
